The Parent Visa (Subclass 103) is a permanent residency visa designed for parents of Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents, or eligible New Zealand citizens. Holders of this visa are granted permanent residence in Australia and may also sponsor eligible family members to join them. Unlike the Aged Parent Visa (Subclass 804), which requires applicants to be at least 67 years of age, the Parent Visa (Subclass 103) does not impose an age restriction on applicants.
With this visa, you can
- stay in Australia indefinitely
- work and study in Australia
- enrol in Australia's public healthcare scheme, Medicare
- sponsor your family members to come to Australia
- travel to and from Australia for 5 years
- attend free English language classes provided by the Adult Migrant English Program, if eligible
- if eligible, apply for Australian citizenship.
You Must
- have an eligible child who is a settled Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen
- meet all applicable visa conditions and follow Australian law
- not have already applied for or hold a Sponsored Parent (Temporary) (subclass 870) visa when applying for this visa.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who can I include in my subclass 103 application?
You may be eligible to include additional family members—such as your partner, your child, or your partner’s child—in your visa application, provided they also satisfy the relevant health and character requirements. For tailored guidance on eligibility and to ensure your application meets all regulatory standards, we recommend consulting with our experienced team at Professional Visa and Education Services.
Why do I have to wait to get a subclass 103 visa? Is there any way to get a parent visa more quickly?
The Parent (subclass 103) visa has a limited number of places available each year and offers a significantly lower government fee compared to other permanent parent visa options. Due to high demand, applicants should be aware that substantial wait times apply for this visa category. For those seeking a faster processing timeframe, the Contributory Parent visa (subclass 173/143) presents an alternative pathway, subject to different fee structures but with expedited processing compared to the subclass 103 visa.
When can I access Medicare?
If you hold a Parent Subclass 103 visa, you may be eligible for Medicare. After your visa is granted, we recommend contacting Medicare to confirm your eligibility. Your Australian Migration Lawyer will also offer guidance and support throughout this process.
