
Medical Treatment Visa (Subclass 602)

The Medical Treatment visa allows you to enter or stay in Australia for less than one year for reasons related to medical care. You may be eligible if you are seeking medical treatment or a consultation, donating an organ, accompanying someone receiving treatment or donating an organ, are a citizen of Papua New Guinea under specific arrangements, or are over 50 and have been refused a permanent visa due to health reasons. Most Medical Treatment visas do not include work rights, but exceptions may be made if you can show that new circumstances have caused significant financial hardship after your arrival.
With this visa, you can
- receive medical treatment or attend a medical consultation
- donate an organ
- support someone who holds this visa, if they are donating an organ or receiving medical treatment
- be granted single or multiple entries to Australia, based on your circumstances
- study for up to 3 months (or longer if you meet exemption requirements)
You Must
- Follow all visa conditions and Australian laws
- Leave Australia before your visa expires
- Have enough funds to support yourself during your stay
Eligibility
To be eligible for a Medical Treatment Visa (subclass 602), applicants must:
- Intend to have medical treatment or a consultation in Australia or intend to donate or receive an organ in Australia or Intend to support a patient or organ donor holding this visa
- Not have any medical condition that poses a risk to public health or safety
- Not currently hold, or have last held, a Temporary Work (International Relations) visa (subclass 403) under the Domestic Worker stream while in Australia
- Have adequate funds to support yourself during your stay
- Meet the health and character requirements
- Arrange payment for your medical treatment in advance, providing written confirmation from the treating hospital

The medical treatment visa is usually granted for the length of your treatment, but typically will not exceed one year.
I’m in Australia and don’t hold a valid visa. Can I apply?
If you are in Australia without a substantive visa, you must include Form 1507 – Evidence of Intended Medical Treatment (including consultations) with your visa application to ensure it is valid.
Can family members apply with me?
Yes, family members—such as carers or parents—can be included as dependents. Each person must meet all eligibility and character requirements. Dependent applications are reviewed individually, and all necessary documents must be submitted for each applicant.
